I appreciate the therapist's willingness to go beyond the scope off the services and provide support to my son and his future success.
The speech and language therapy services at Pasadena Child Development Associates, Inc. focus on interactive strategies in functional play activities to achieve specific speech and language goals. Our services are part of a multi-disciplinary team approach that strives to integrate the child's goals into every aspect of each therapy in which the child participates.
We use a "total communication" approach to therapy that helps the child learn to use words, signs, or augmentative communication systems in order to communicate. We work with children demonstrating a wide range of speech and language needs from helping with a mild articulation disorder to achieving those "first words". We see children for language or learning difficulties and reading disabilities.
Parent involvement in the therapy process is essential to ensure carryover to other daily living activities. Parents are considered partners in every aspect of the therapy service.
Speech and language sessions at PCDA take into account not only the child's language level and intent to communicate, but also the emotional state of the child and the impact on communication when the child is frustrated, mad, fearful, or excited. We also consider how sensory issues impact the child's capacity to communicate. Some children need to calm down, others need to "wind up" before sounds and words begin to appear.
The relationships between emotional states (affect), sensory information, and communication strategies all must be considered during each therapy session. This is why the multi-disciplinary team approach provided at PCDA is so effective. Everyone works together to provide the most comprehensive service possible.
