A Music Together® Class is

  • 45 minutes of PURE FUN with your child each week for 10 weeks!
  • A community of families sharing songs, instrument play, rhythm chants and movement activities in a relaxed, playful, non-performance-oriented setting.
  • Music learned through developmentally appropriate activities that support and respect the unique learning styles of very young children.
  • Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers participating at their own levels in family-style classes of mixed ages. Class size ranges from 6 to 12 students.
  • Parents and caregivers contributing to the enrichment of their child's music environment-regardless of their own musical abilities
  • A new song collection every semester for three years, featuring great arrangements of original and traditional songs in a wide variety of tonalities, meters and cultural styles.

Our Classes

Music Together Fall Program at PCDAMusic Together® at PCDA is available in both Mixed Ages Classes and Outreach Classes.  Outreach classes are specifically reserved for children who receive services at PCDA or have a developmental delay.  Please contact Melissa St. John for clarification on which class will be a better fit for your family.

Mixed-age Classes

This is the essential Music Together® class, one that a child can attend from birth through age four through all nine song collections. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers—grouping children of a variety of ages because this fosters natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, or exploring musical instruments. Any caregivers—parents, grandparents, nanny—can bring the children. The whole family is welcome for this important family music experience.

Outreach

PCDA's board certified Music Therapists provide the same song collections for children from birth through age four and their families to serve families who might not otherwise be able to experience Music Together®. These classes are reserved for families of children who receive other services at PCDA, have a developmental delay, or for a parent who would like extra support.  Structured to have a smaller class size, each teacher has a greater opportunity to tend to the needs of your child, and encourage your ability to support your child through music.  Our mission is: To provide the highest quality music and movement experiences to as many young children as possible and to involve their parents and other adult caregivers, including early childhood professionals.

Basic Principles of the Music Together® Philosophy:

  1. All children are musical
  2. Therefore, all children can achieve basic music competence, which we have defined as the ability to sing in tune and move with accurate rhythm
  3. This growth is best achieved in a playful, developmentally appropriate, non-performance-oriented learning environment that is musically rich yet immediately accessible to the child's-and the adult's!-participation.
