Grant News!

Music Therapy Grant

MT.SessionPasadena-Foothill Association of Realtors (PFAR) has made a generous donation so that more children can receive music therapy at a very low cost. If a child loves music, and has challenges in social-emotional development, communication or behavior, Music Therapy may be a great way to help.  Music therapy can help a child to achieve non-musical goals, such as increasing shared attention, reciprocal interactions, and increase creativity and shared problem solving.

Through this grant, 4 children and their families will receive 24 Music Therapy sessions for $10 per session (6 months).  The child, his or her parents and sometimes siblings, come to a weekly one hour session conducted by a Board-certified Music Therapist.  Children ages 2-12 with a range of developmental disabilities (Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, William's Syndrome, Global Delays, etc.) may benefit from this form of developmental therapy.  Children engage in a variety of rhythm and music-based activities to increase interaction and build new skills. The family may be singing, listening, moving, playing instruments, and playing in improvised activities in a musical environment that encourages interactions and allows each child freedom to explore and express themselves.

If your child loves music, and this sounds like a service you're interested in pursuing, please refer to the Music Therapy section on our website for more information about Music Therapy and how to apply for the grant!

Sibling Support Group

Through a generous grant from Northrop Grumman "ECHO" organization, we are pleased to offer a support group for brothers and sisters of children with developmental disabilities. The group will meet once a week for 10 weeks. This will be a chance for children to learn, reflect, and share their experiences, concerns, and hopes with the guidance of a therapist. We will begin with a small group of 7-9 year olds, led by Melinda Martinez, MFTI, and later expand to other ages. The group will meet Mondays from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm. The cost is $250 to participate, and need-based scholarships are available. Further description and an application will be on our website soon.

Invitation to Serve

Staff PicPCDA relies upon the help of parents, volunteers, and community friends to be able to offer the many programs and services for children with special needs.  Would you like to help?  We have three active committees that would love to have your ideas and help.

The events planning committee plans two major fundraising events each year: the Spring Into Action family picnic will be held in April, and the Harvest Moon home tour in October.

The fundraising committee brainstorms about various fundraising efforts including our on-line auction in December.

The volunteer committee organizes volunteers to support many activities and events for all the departments at PCDA.

In addition, we are seeking new members for our Board of Directors.  If you would like to help in any capacity, please contact Diane Cullinane, M.D., Executive Director, or any of the committee chairs. Thank you!

Valentine's Socials - A Success!

The Valentine's Socials were a great success. At the Valentine's Celebration Social (2-7 year olds), the children expressed their creativity during the heart decorating craft. They created beautiful hearts for themselves and their loved ones. They also enjoyed a variety of other activities, such as Pin the Ribbon on the Heart, dancing, and parachute play. The children had fun dancing and playing together, as well as watching and imitating one another. At the Cupid's Crush Social (8-12 year olds), the children  worked up a sweat as they danced the night away to the freeze dance, and Cha Cha slide. They enjoyed playing games such as limbo, musical chairs, and hot potato. By the end of the social, the children were tired, but were excited about the new friendships they developed. Although the children from both socials did not want it to end, they look forward to next year.
